How English has become a world language

  • The main reason why English has become a world language is imperialism. The British Empire spread to all continents, and when the Empire reached its peak, about ¼ of the world’s population belonged to Britain.
  • The first settlers in the USA came from Britain, and they of course spoke English. Even though there are differences between British and American English, they are still very much alike. The USA is the leading nation of the world, which helps English to continue its spread as a world language.
  • English is a very flexible language, with a large vocabulary. It is also quite easy to learn contrary to many other languages.
