lingua franca
A common language which makes communication between people with different mother tongues possible.
International English
The concept of English as a global language. It is what you need to communicate in the global world, since English has become the lingua franca in many areas of life.
International English can also refer to the different varieties of English spoken around the world.
Standard English
The English accepted as a national norm in an Anglophone (English-speaking country).
The Commonwealth
An intergovernmental organization of fifty-three independent member states. All but two of these countries were formerly part of the British Empire. The Commonwealth developed out of the British Empire.
Creole
A language that is a mixture of a European language and one or more other languages and is spoken as the first language of a people.
Pidgin
A language made up of two or more languages, used as a way of communicating by people whose first languages are different from each other.
Descendant
A person, plant, or animal that is descended from a particular ancestor.
Descent
The origin or background of a person in terms of family or nationality.
Caste system
The system of dividing society into different castes (degrees of ritual purity or pollution and of social status).
The British Raj
Is the name given to the period of British colonial rule in India.
The Jewel in the Crown
The British Prime Minister from 1874 to 1881 called India “the brightest jewel in the crown”, because India had valuable resources and was the most important of the overseas possessions of the British Empire. Queen Victoria was Empress of India from 1876 until 1947.
Outsourcing
When companies move their production to a low-cost country to save money.
Brain drain
When the high-educated people move from their country to another, because they seek better salaries or work conditions. We often see that people from less developed countries immigrate to developed countries.
Setting
The place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes place.
